LPGH-1 – South Sea & Magong City

Depart for Tungpan Island, composed of walls of basalt columns, these spectacular formations have given the island its nickname “Penghu’s Yellowstone Park”. Head next to Twin hearts Stone Weir. This romantic sight is an ancient 700-year old fish trap that was built using coral and black basalt shaped like two hearts. As the tide rises and then falls, fish are trapped inside the structure’s walls. Visit the Jhongshe Historic House which is situated in the south of Tiantai hill (originally known as Huajhai). It is a traditional old cluster of residences with a history of 300 years. Many 3-section courtyard houses made of ‘shihlao shihku’ rock can still be found in the village. Head to Tiantai hill which is located 53 meters above sea level, Tiantai Hill is the highest point of the island. The whole hill is composed of large expanses of green pasture upon which herds of cattle graze and is the most attractive scenery of Wangan.

Visit Tianhougong in Jhongyang Li next, built in Wanli 20th year of the Ming Dynasty (1592). The elegant and unsophisticated Matsu Temple is the oldest one in Taiwan with a history of 400 years. It is a first-class cultural heritage site as well as the center of religion of Penghu inhabitants. The pillars and beams in the temple are very refined and delicately carved. The temple was built by a famous craftsman of Tangshan and there are a number of artistic sculptures. Visit the ‘Four Eyes’ Well which never dries even in droughts and the water is clean and cool. The well is also called ‘Four-Caves’ well or ‘Four-Holes’ well and it is the earliest well in Magong, dating back to the Yuan dynasty. Guests can next head to Shuncheng Gate, classified as second grade relic. Climbing up the wall enables one to take in the view of the coastal scenery of the Magong inner bay. Finally stop for some shopping at local shops.

 

LPGH-2 – Round Island & Magong City

Start your tour by visiting the Penghu Great Bridge, the Trans-Ocean Bridge spans Houmen (Roaring Gate) Channel, linking the islands of Baisha and Siyu. At 2,494 meters, it is the first sea-crossing bridge in the Far East. Standing right in front of the Bauan Temple in Tongliang Village of Baisha Township, the Tongliang Great Banyan Tree is over three hundred years old. The Tungliang Banyan is revered by the people of Penghu as sacred, and has been designated as the official county tree. Proceed to Siyu Western Fort which was built in 1887 during the Ching dynasty to protect the Taiwan straits from pirates and marauders. This ancient fort, surrounded by high walls has four cannons as well as tunnels beneath.

Visit the Erkan Traditional Village showcasing old, traditional-style houses which are among the most engrossing of Penghu's many cultural attractions. The exquisite craftsmanship evident its rustic yet refined simplicity highlights the skills of its builders. Stop at the Penghu Marine Aquarium to see interesting displays that illustrate traditional fishing equipment, aquaculture farms, life in a simulated fishing village, the evolution of fishing vessels, various types of fishing activities in the islands and life on the coral reef. Visit Jibeiyu and see the largest island in the seas north of the main Penghu group, Jibei which encompasses a land area of more than three square kilometers. The eastern side of the island consists mainly of basalt uplands, and the western half features a large expanse of sandy beach that has long given the island its reputation as an excellent destination for water sports.
