Legend goes that after defeating Ravana, Lord Rama stopped here and got this fort built which he then handed to younger brother Laxman in order to keep a watch over Lanka. Laxman came to be known as “Bandhavish” meaning Lord of the Fort. He is worshipped as god of the fort in a temple, which still exists in the fort.
